Restoring the Earth: Blue Planet’s Mission to Reclaim Landfills for a Sustainable Future

Bintang Capital Partners is always proud of the impact delivered by our portfolio companies.

Blue Planet Environmental Solutions, with its innovative and sustainable waste management solutions, is a business we have backed since 2023. A key component of Blue Planet’s diverse solutions is its fully integrated landfill remediation service, which is capable of rehabilitating massive polluted landfill sites into clean, habitable land, allowing biodiversity to flourish once again and unlocking the land for public benefit.

Overflowing landfills are an urgent global crisis. In Malaysia, an estimated 38,000 metric tonnes of solid waste are sent to landfills daily, while in Kuala Lumpur alone, 2,500 metric tonnes of solid waste could pile up to the height of the Petronas Twin Towers in a week. Apart from the catastrophic environmental damage caused by landfills, such as greenhouse gas emissions and pollutants leaching into water, local communities face health risks from contaminated drinking water and air pollution. In July 2024, a fire at the Pulau Burung landfill in Penang caused massive pollution, forcing 10 nearby schools to close and some 400 residents to evacuate.

To tackle the landfill crisis, Blue Planet deploys a wide array of waste segregation, extraction, and processing technologies to clear millions of metric tonnes of waste and acres of legacy landfills. Waste is recycled into materials of value for reuse (e.g., metals, sand, stones, and plastics) or responsibly disposed of as Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF), a green energy source. To date, Blue Planet has completed over 25 landfill remediation projects and recovered more than 600 acres of land.

An example of Blue Planet’s environmental stewardship is its Vijayawada Dumpsite Reclamation Project in India, completed in July 2020. The project transformed Vijayawada’s largest dumpsite, a 45-acre wasteland surrounded by densely populated communities. The reclaimed site now includes a farmers’ market, children’s park, sanitary waste management facilities, and other public amenities. Blue Planet estimates the project processed 305,897 cubic metres of waste and mitigated 211,681 metric tonnes of CO2 emissions.

In March 2024, Blue Planet’s subsidiary, Zigma Global Environ Solutions Pvt. Ltd. (Part of the Blueplanet group), secured 50% of a project contract from the Greater Chennai Corporation to biomine the longstanding Kodungaiyur dumpyard in North Chennai. Spanning 352 acres, the dumpyard contains 6.6 million cubic meters of garbage accumulated over five decades. This landmark initiative reflects Zigma Global’s exceptional track record in environmental conservation.

We laud Blue Planet and Zigma Global’s efforts in restoring our world towards a cleaner, greener and more sustainable future, one landfill at a time.
